VWP History

VWP History

  • VWP was founded on Voyageur Island, Nym Lake, Ontario, Canada, in 1960 by lecturer, educator and wilderness preservationist Charlie Ericksen and Jean Goff Marantette.
  • In 1986, dearest friends of the late founders, Guy Savoie and family officially undertook VWP’s operation and direction.
  • Inspired by the Savoie family’s proud French-Canadian Voyageur and Aboriginal Metis heritage, the Programme was further developed to highlight the culture and history of the Voyageurs as the first eco-traveler in Canada’s Heritage Canoe Water Routes Area of Northwest Ontario, Canada.
  • With the foundation of 3 generations, Voyageur Wilderness Programme is still family owned and operated – celebrating 55 years in 2015. Today, the next two generations of outdoor eco-adventure enthusiasts and wilderness advocates continue under the direction of Michelle Savoie, accompanied by husband Dale (biologist), son Joseph (wildlife biologist), daughter Madeleine (remote paramedic) and infamous lab Cayenne.
  • VWP continues to be at the forefront of ecological practices while assisting in the promotion and maintenance of Quetico Park and wilderness areas.
  • The mission continues to be ecological/ environmental education through wilderness experience.
  • The concept is to give people an appreciation and understanding of wilderness which influences their connection to their communities and the world.
